The Joy of Mortgage

There’s a reason no sane person has ever written a book with the same title as this column: it would be lying. Now, granted, fiction is basically an acceptable lie (in as much as it’s something that didn’t happen, but we feel like it’s OK since we told everyone ahead of time that we were just making it up).

Mortgages—and the application for them—is a pretty joyless business. From the consumer standpoint, anyway. Maybe mortgage bankers really like it. They must, because a] they are in the business and 2] they seem to spend way more time on it than is reasonable.

Summer Vacation

It’s that time of year when we start planning our summer vacations. In earnest, I should say, for some people have been planning their vacation for quite some time now—in some cases since the Carter Administration.

A Comic Book Preview Review

“Hydroland” by Justin Martin & Mel Todd
a review of the preview by Sam White

A powerless member of the new media, I was given the gracious opportunity to preview an upcoming comic book by the above-mentioned Martin & Todd called “Hydroland”. Briefly, Hydroland is the story of a people who live in the water. They’ve lived in peace until, suddenly they are invaded.

Slow to Respond

You may have seen the news: a man in (where else?) California is suing BMW because he says riding a motorcycle has given him …

Um … this is a family newspaper.

So, let’s think of those commercials where the man takes a pill and then winds up in an inexplicably separate bath tub next to his wife. If the pill had worked, wouldn’t you think they would be in the same bath tub? Anyway, you know what those pills are supposed to do for a man, right?

Crass Helmets

I have long been under the impression that swear words were for people who weren’t bright enough to use a better word. Nothing in my years of experience has led me to be disabused of that notion.

Fire

What is it that is so fascinating about fire? I’m not talking arson, just a nice, reasonable fire.

On my back patio, I have a fire pit. It’s a big metal bowl on four legs, in which one can build a fire (hence the “fire” part, not really sure about the “pit”). It also has a nice metal screen you can put over the top and allow the heat out but—hopefully—keep the hot ashes in.

Forward Thinking

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait until November!

No, it’s not that I have a particular candidate I am anxious to vote for. Of the major ones who are left, I can’t seem to get enthused about any of them. I’m just looking forward to election day in the vain hope that this will all be over with.

I appreciate living in a republic. I am very thankful for my freedom to vote. I’m just really tired of this election.

Where Do They Pin The Nametags?

Thousands of people are descending on a little town in France named Bugarach (I have no idea about the pronunciation). It seems that—once again—the world is about to end and this town is THE place to be to see it happen.

The more I look at it, it’s probably pronounced “France”, just like it looks.

Hopes Rings Eternal

Why do we like spring so much? Most people do, anyway. There will always be some people who are contrary to any idea, just as there will always be some people who are wrong.

Anyway, what’s so great about Spring? (I had to capitalize it at least once so you’ll know I’m not just talking about the springs in your mattress, some of which are poking through and isn’t it about time you did something about that?)
